Indonesia Welcomes the General Election Results in Palestine  

NO. 04/PR/I/2006. Indonesia welcomes the general elections results in Palestine, which took place in a peaceful and democratic fashion.  Furthermore, Indonesia is of the view that the winner of the election was decided by the Palestinian people themselves.  Consequently, Indonesia as a democratic country respects the democratic results undertaken by the Palestinian people.  It is based upon such premise that other democratic countries ought to respect the election results in Palestine.

Indonesia also calls upon the international community to avoid making early judgments on the election results as well as establishing presumptions by certain quarters, that the winner of the elections is linked to certain hardline elements and is therefore ineligible to govern.  The eligibility to govern by certain segment within the Palestinian community rest entirely upon the Palestinian people, provided the elections was conducted democratically.

Indonesia urges the winner of the general election in Palestine to continue to carry out efforts in finding a peaceful solution on the Palestinian - Israeli question.
